The main characters in Artemis Fowl are Artemis, his butler, Root, and Captain Short. Artemis Fowl is a kid in a grown man's body. He seeks after money and is trying to get it through the fairies. His goal is to rob them and he is always one step ahead of them. His butler is basically his guardian angel. His job is to assist Artemis whenever and wherever he needs him to and to also protect Artemis with his life. Root is a fairy who is really important and he controls a lot of other fairies. Root is the equivalent to a military general. I do not like how the main character is a stuck up kid who thinks that the world revolves around him. Artemis thinks that everything is about him and that is what makes him vulnerable. Holly Short is also a fairy and she is also stuck up like Artemis. She decides that she didn't need to do the ritual that fairies do to have their magical powers for years. Then, when Root finds out that she hasn't been doing the ritual he sends her to go do it. She then is captured by Artemis and that is when the conflict starts.
One of the themes in Artemis Fowl is the wanting of money. This is because the entire story revolves around Artemis Fowl trying to pull of the biggest heist by stealing all of the fairies money, a species that 99% of the human race has forgotten about. Artemis's family has already been in the robbing/heist "business" for years. So, Artemis Fowl is like the Pablo Escobar of this world, but he is a lot less violent. This book also has a language that was totally made up by Eoin Colfer, and the name of this language is Gnommish. This is the language that the fairies use to communicate.
